How Team GO Rocket works

Shadows come from defeating Team GO Rocket members. The structure is:

Grunts: Found at invaded Pokestops and in balloons, they hint at their team with a line like "Go, Grunt!" before battle. Beating them yields a Shadow Pokemon encounter.
Leaders (Cliff, Sierra, Arlo): Located via Rocket Radar built from six Grunt clues. They use stronger, often second-stage Pokemon.
Giovanni: Reached with a Super Rocket Radar from periodic Special Research, and he always holds a Shadow Legendary.

The Shadow attack boost, explained

A Shadow Pokemon deals roughly 20% more damage with its fast and charged moves but takes more damage in return because its defense is reduced. The exact defensive penalty is community-observed around a 17% to 20% drop, so Shadows hit harder and die faster. In raid DPS math, the offensive gain usually outweighs the defensive loss, which is why top raid attackers are almost always Shadow versions.

This boost does not change IVs, CP, or moves; it is a flat multiplier applied in battle. That means a low-IV Shadow can still outperform a high-IV purified copy in pure damage, an important point when you are deciding what to keep.

Purification: cost and benefits

Purifying a Shadow costs Candy and Stardust scaled to the species, with the price rising for rarer Pokemon. The benefits are:

When to keep Shadow

Keep a Pokemon as a Shadow when damage output is the priority. The clearest cases:

When to purify

Purify when one of these is true:

You need the IV bump to hit a PvP breakpoint, since +2 per stat can flip a bad matchup.
You want the cheaper power-up curve for a Pokemon you will use a lot.
You prefer the aesthetic and the Return move, or you plan to trade it (Shadows cannot be traded).
The species is weak anyway, so the attack boost is wasted and purification at least saves resources.

Why can't I remove Frustration?
